After each individual wanted a personal vengeance against a member of the Avengers, knowing they couldn't take them alone, they banded together to defeat the Avengers and kill their enemies.

Formation
After Loki wanted revenge on his brother Thor Odinson. He knew now that he was part of the team the Avengers, he'd never get his chance and so he went to Midguard to find members to form his own group, each who had a grudge with one of the Avengers. Eventually Loki recruited, Heinrich Zemo, Emil Blonsky and Anton Vanko.

They later went to the Triskelion and attacked the Avengers. The Dark Avengers battled their foes but were later defeated by the Avengers, all members survived except for Abomination who was savagely ripped apart by the Hulk. The remaining members were imprisoned at the Triskelion except for Loki who was imprisoned in Asgard.
