Even from a young age, it was apparent that Cletus Kasady was not exactly a stable child. At nine-years-old, he pushed his grandmother down the stairs, killing her, and was able to blame it on the fact that she tripped. As he reached maturity, he began spending his free time killing and skinning wild animals, eventually moving up to mutilating the neighbor's dog.
Before he could even graduate High School, Cletus was arrested for manslaughter and served two years and juvenile detention. While inside, he beat two other kids to death and was able to shoot a guard after stealing his gun and equipment, which he used to escape. To cover up loose ends, Cletus murdered his parents and everyone involved in the case that put him away.
He moved to New York in order to get away and also have a better selection of options. At first, he was only capable of murdering homeless people, but he felt this wasn't getting him enough attention. So he started going after college age girls and prominent politicians. Eventually, he earned a reputation for himself as the "Carnage Killer", and was hunted down relentlessly by the NYPD. One day, after holding an entire apartment building hostage by threatening to blow himself up, he was arrested by Spider-Man and sent to the Ravencroft Asylum for the Criminally Insane.
At Ravencroft, Cletus was placed in a cell next to Eddie Brock, the criminal formerly known as Venom. Cletus and Eddie took an instant disliking to each other, and constantly threatened to murder the other. Eventually, when Eddie was freed by his symbiote, Cletus discovered that it had spawned an offspring. Enamored with what he witnessed of Venom's powers, Cletus immediately bonded with the symbiote, dubbing themselves Carnage. While Venom simply made a clean getaway, Carnage savored the opportunity to murder as many guards and inmates as he could.
As Carnage, he became one of the fiercest, deadliest foes ever faced by Spider-Man. So much so, that to defeat him, he found himself teaming up with Venom. However, no prison could keep Cletus and Carnage apart forever, as they long to be together and continue their massacre.
Eventually, when Carnage discovered that Eddie Brock had been murdered by Kraven, he set out to kill Kraven as revenge for not being able to kill Brock himself. However, he was too late as Kraven met his end in Wakanda against the Guardian of the Galaxy, Gamora.
Noticing that the Venom Symbiote had bonded to Groot, Carnage decided to sneak aboard their ship and take out his revenge on all of them. He made himself known just as they left Earth's atmosphere, and crashed the ship onto the moon. He put up a bloody fight, but in the end was not a match for Adam Warlock, who used his abilities to completely obliterate both Kasady and his symbiote.

- Unlike the Venom Symbiote, the Carnage Symbiote has only ever bonded with another person in order to return itself to Kasady.
- He always enjoyed calling Venom "Dad" to get on his nerves.
