History[]

Early Years[]

Clay Quartmermain (born May, 1980) was the first child and first born son of married S.H.I.E.L.D. agent couple Hank and Becky Quartermain. Though growing up Clay, and eventually his younger brother Alan, knew none of this about their parents. Clay and his brother also had no idea all the various lessons their parents gave them in their youths such as hunting, tracking, shooting, and self-defense, were in preparation for the day ever came if they lost their lives and their children needed to survive on their own. Though thankfully that day never came to pass and Clay grew up normally with both his parents in his life. He then decided to follow in his father's footsteps and serve in the military. Thus he applied, and was accepted to the United States Air Force academy, where he ended up graduating at the top of his class. Afer which do to his keen eyes for details, good luck, and quick-wit he was recruited into Air Force intelligence. Where he quickly rose through the ranks. Even though most of his co-workers and superiors and supervisors described him as extremely arrogant and difficult to with with at the best of times. Though no one had a bad thing to say about his skills and dedication to getting the job done.

It was all this that saw Clay reach the rank of captain before he decided to retire from military service. Where he was then immediately scouted and recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. eventually learning the truth about his parents. Though instead of being angry Clay understood their actions. It also made him proud to carry on their legacy. So with that Clay went ahead and once again graduated at the top of his class and soon became an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Rookie To Commander[]

Once he completed his training Clay steadily but quickly worked his way up through the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D often crossing paths with his fellow academy classmate Barbara Morse. As well as with other highly decorated and well-respected agents within the organization such as the likes of Clint Barton, Phillip Coulson, and Monica Chang. Leading him from quickly going from a rookie agent to an experienced commander. Who eventually caught the notice of the director, who was then Nicholas Fury Jr. Who impressed with Clay put him in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D Alpha Team, a quick reaction, special forces/counter-terrorism unit that was often the first through the door in many situations. A fact that made taking leadership of the unit all that more appealing to Clay. After which he found himself apart of the upper echelons of S.H.I.E.L.D., working particularly close with then deputy director Maria Hill, who Clay whittled down and eventually found himself in a relationship with.

Supporting The Avengers[]

After the Avengers were formed Clay was one of the several key agents in S.H.I.E.L.D. that supported them wholeheartedly. He often provided tactical support to them with Alpha Team. Especially during the deadly Ultron Offensive.

HYDRA Uprising[]

Clay was called to assist Captain America team in the wake of their discovery Hydra was now mostly S.H.I.E.L.D. To that end he participated in the battle of the Triskelion, where he led his most loyal members of Alpha Team against the Hydra sleeper agents. Then in the aftermath of this event, with S.H.I.E.L.D. now being disavowed he hunkered down with Maria. The two deciding with all that happened to get married, since they didn't know what the future held. Then shortly after this while Maria stayed out in public view and acted as a liaison between what remained of S.H.I.E.L.D., now led by Phil Coulson, and the Avengers Clay went to ground and joined up with Coulson and his team. To better fight the Hydra threat.

Ultimate Alliance War[]

In the wake of the Red Skull forming a Cabal of the world's most notorious individuals to help him and Hydra conquer it Clay and S.H.I.E.L.D. supported the heroes and their allies in bringing them down. After which S.H.I.E.L.D. was re-instated in an official capacity. Clay being an instrumental part in making that happen. Until the superhuman Civil War began a few months after this occured.

Civil War[]

When Maria was injured during the opening weeks of the war Clay stepped back from his duties at S.H.I.E.L.D. to look after her. He then subsequently resigned from the agency, since he could not in good faith bring himself to fight against Captain America and the anti-registration forces. Whom he started secretly supporting in the wake of Norman Osborn hostile takeover of the superhuman community following the end of the Skrull Secret Invasion. Then once Osborn regime fell he re-joined S.H.I.E.L.D.

From Field Leader To Teacher[]

Though Clay once again resigned from the organization to take care of his son Clay Quartermain Jr. in the wake of Maria's existence being erased in the wake of the infamous "Snap". Though he did give minimal support to the remaining heroes and their allies, in hopes of getting his wife back. Which after he did in early 2020 made Clay make the decision to retire from field duty, and instead take up a teaching position at S.H.I.E.L.D. academy. Given not only that Maria still wanted to continue being the organizations Deputy Director, and he felt one of them needed to be out of the firing line for their son, but also because he felt he had a lot to teach the next generation. Given his many life experiences.
