Former gangster who got caught in the crossfire's of violence, Carl was wrongly accused of a crime he did not commit and sent to prison. While in prison he would be experimented on by the crooked doctors and unknown to them, they bestowed him with superhuman strength and impenetrable skin. After leaving prison, Carl knew it was time to change his ways and adopted to alias "Luke Cage" and would fight and protect the streets of Harlem.

Assembling The Knights

Ever since he got his abilities, Luke immediately took to the streets of Harlem and steps into altercations if needed. Luke never really had any intention of leaving his home of Harlem even despite of the cities increasing crime rate. Luke wanted to stay put and do the work himself to clean up the streets and once again make Harlem a place where kids can play outside without having to worry about being in any danger. One evening, Luke stepped in and roughed up a man who was trying to both mug and force himself on a woman. Just before he passed out, the man shouted threats at Luke and told him "Just wait until the Kingpin gets his hands on you:.

Luke himself was aware that even with his abilities, he wasn't gonna single-handedly bring down both the Kingpin and his crime empire. Luke needed a team of like-minded street-level vigilantes. Luke had heard about a woman who lived nearby and once fought crime under the name "Jewel".
