Early Years

The Hulk, before the Festering Fear infected him
Bruce Banner was a renowned scientist in the fields of Biochemistry, Nuclear Physics, and Gamma Radiation. He was recruited by the Bio-Tech Force Enhancement Project, becoming one of the scientists who tried to recreate the Super-Soldier Serum which originated Captain America in World War II, but when an exposure to high levels of Gamma Radiation instead of Vita Radiation went awry, the mild-mannered scientist found himself plagued with a peculiar condition; when angered or provoked, he would transform into the rage-fueled and nearly mindless green-skinned monster known as the Hulk.
Despite being treated as a pariah by the authorities, Banner dedicated his life travelling across the world treating hunger, famine, and poverty-ridden countries, helping the sick and poor in the secretive way he could. However, Nick Fury, the current Director of the international peacekeeping agency S.H.I.E.L.D., recruited Bruce into the Avengers for both his brain and brawn. Bruce reluctantly agreed with Fury's deal, but remained skeptic that S.H.I.E.L.D. only needs his genius mind to help them deal with the threat of the Asgardian Loki. As the Hulk, Bruce joined the Avengers against Loki and his Masters of Evil along with the additional threat of the Skrulls. Once the Avengers rested after the attempted invasion, Banner became reunited with his old flame Betty Ross and had even befriended his new teammates after relocating at the Avengers Tower, free to live his life without any apprehension warranted after him.
The Sickness
Almost a few months since the Chitauri-Skrull Attacks in New York has passed, Bruce was spending his free time with Betty while they work together in the Avengers Tower, finding a cure for the Hulk. However, his normal agent life went awry real quick when his teammate Black Widow began to feel and act strange since she last met Tony Stark, a wild behavior that driven her to cough blood on Bruce's face and attack the rest of her teammates. As a result, Captain America was painfully bitten before subduing her with Hawkeye's assistance, who handed his best friend into medical care and inspection after reluctantly knocking her out and restraining her. Everything was thought to be handled well, until Bruce himself was feeling just as unwell when he showed symptoms similar to rabies that induces him aggressive behavior. A distressed Bruce, by impulse, had turned into the Hulk in hopes of counteracting the invasive pathogens that were entering his body, only to fail realizing that his attempt would only make things worse on a more catastrophic level.
His teammates Hawkeye and Thor tried their best to knock the Hulk out and have him sedated, only to little avail as their battle ensues in the populous streets of New York City. Thankfully, the web-slinging hero Spider-Man Spider-Man and the Defenders had arrived at the scene just in time to help the two, a crucial contribution that got the Avengers to restrain the berserk of the Green Goliath. Unfortunate for the joint alliance who celebrated far too early, their efforts were proven to be short-lived when the weakened Hulk manages to bite off the forearm of Hawkeye, sending the latter to scream in great agony, both infecting him with whatever viral pathogen that the Hulk was carrying and giving the latter an opportunity to smash his way out as he continued his mayhem across Manhattan wherein his habits rapidly changed from simply infecting countless of bystanders, to tearing and consuming the fleshes of the living with his bare hands.
As days, weeks, and months went on, the rest of the states across America became engulfed with the infected due to the Hulk's small yet significant cataclysm, who subconsciously call themselves as the collective "Festering Dreamers". While the infected Hulk still remains as the strongest Avenger for enough time as he continued devouring states full of every surviving that he could smell and hunt down, the goliath would meet unintentionally his greatest challenger when a wandering Hulk was lured and tricked by the new Spider-Woman into breaking a hole underground the Manhattan streets. Finding himself in the sewers, he faced a festered Thing, who revealed that the mutation of the Nightmare's Dream has progressively transformed the latter to be a lot larger and more evolved than the infected Hulk ever was.
Feeling somewhat fearful but more insulted by the demeaning appearance of the Thing, Hulk was initially overpowered by the former due to his size and intimidation, only for the Hulk to feel its own mutation flowing through its decaying veins: his own rage being powered by the Sickness. Motivated by this hunch, his Sickness-induced rage released microparticles in the air, which attracted hundreds of infected civilians nearby the area to help overwhelm the Thing in his number of assistance by devouring the rocky mutated Dreamer. With this chance, the Green Goliath gave the final blow at the weakened Thing, punching through his stony head, shattering his skull into smithereens. The Hulk was unchallenged once more, and in celebration, he and the rest of the Dreamers around the area feasted on the corpse of the mutated Ben Grimm. Tasting on his fallen ally, the Hulk morbidly described the mutated Thing's flesh and bones to be the same as steak as he could feel his mutation at accelerating at a faster rate.

Trivia
- Despite being infected for so long, the Hulk still has Banner's memories of Betty Ross as a recurring symptom of the Sickness, in which the infected would still retain both their recent and deepest memories and greatest fears. However, due to being him infected, Hulk couldn't help but drool since he only of thought infecting her as his "bride" once he gets to find her once again.
