History

Mutants are a threat, and we must do everything within our power to protect ourselves from them.
Bolivar Trask

Creation of the Sentinels

Dr. Bolivar Trask was a scientist and robotics expert born and raised in Turner County, South Dakota, a member of the highly wealthy Trask family. As he grew older he grew concerned about the emergence of superpowered beings and hoped to find a solution to this problem, founding Trask Industries to work on projects that would help humanity to thrive in the future age of superhumans. When his own son Larry Trask developed mutant powers that allowed him to see the future, but also left him blind, Bolivar attempted to 'cure' his son with a mutant suppressing device. Instead the device sent Larry's powers into overdrive, resulting in a sudden aneurism that killed him.

Devastated, Bolivar became obsessed with the idea that the mutant genome had killed his son, and that mutants would one day surpass humanity. Bolivar would use his public profile to publish a series of articles on the threat of mutants and one, featuring an illustration of mutant overlords keeping humans as slaves, would become a symbol for anti-mutant relations. Charles Xavier, a prominent pro-mutant voice, invited Trask for a public debate on human/mutant relations, during which the Brotherhood of Mutants would attack. Although Bolivar was saved by the X-Men, this incident would lead him to decide that humanity had no choice but to fight back against the mutants. He moved all of his companies resources into creating a machine that could do what humans couldn't - eliminate the mutant threat.

Trask and his scientists would develop and create a machine capable of tracking and detaining mutants, the Sentinels. Learning of this, Bastion would contact Trask and bring him on board for Project Wideawake, an anti-mutant task force funded by the U.S. government. The Sentinels proved highly effective at capturing mutants who, unbeknownst to anyone outside of Bastion and Trask's inner circle, were used for experimentation in how to either cure, or eliminate, mutantkind. When Magneto and the Brotherhood of Mutants attacked one of these detention camps, which also housed the lead sight of the Sentinel Project, and discovered the truth of Trask's experiments Magneto killed him in cold blood, encasing and crushing him in metal taken from his own machines.
