Origin
Ben Reilly is a clone of Peter Parker aka Spider-Man. A clone created by the Jackal, Ben fought Peter who he thought was a clone of him. Peter won the fight, seemingly accidentally killing Ben and dumping his body down a industrial chimney.

Ben as the Scarlet Spider
Ben came to believe that he must be the clone, since he later saw Peter and Mary Jane embrace, and he could not accept his feelings for her at that time. Creating a new identity for himself as Ben Reilly, he moved to San Fransisco to exile himself. He later returned to New York and created a new alias known as the Scarlet Spider.
Clone Saga
Norman Osborn eventually faked documents claiming Ben was the real Peter Parker all along. This drove Peter mad, killing his wife Mary Jane and going on a killing spree trying to find Ben and kill him. Peter was eventually caught and put in prison, leading to Ben taking up the mantle of Spider-Man.
Spider-Man
Ben as Spider-Man
Ben lasted as Spider-Man for 5 years, even marrying Felicia Hardy aka the Black Cat, before she was killed by the Hobgoblin. Peter eventually escaped prison and killed Eddie Brock, stealing the symbiote from him in order to become the new Venom. As Venom, Peter killed Ben and resurrected him, repeating the process for the next 300 years.
The Shattered
His mind broken from the events the took place, Ben adopted the new alias of the Shattered. He befriends his former enemy Kindred as an ally. To make himself stronger, he took Cletus Kasady's codex of the Carnage symbiote and injected it into his body, altering his appearance into a mix of his old Spider-Man suit and that of Carnage. Hunting down Peter, he finds him nothing but a skeleton as the symbiote had eaten away at his body for centuries. Venom attacks Shattered, leaving him a bloody mess before he lands a sonic chip in the symbiote, killing it instantly. Ben and Kindred then roam the apocalyptic wasteland hoping to find a new purpose.
