The exact details of Azazel's early life are unknown, as he has told different people three different backstories, all of which could be lies, but they all hold elements of receiving military training and his confirmed reign over Mesopotamia. As ruler of this ancient land, he gathered demonic mutants with his teleportation powers to create his elite army, the Neyaphem. With his army he planned to extend his empire with sights on world domination.
However, a clan of mutants called the Cheyarafim rose up with the oppressed humans against their tyrant. Knowing that there was no prison on Earth that could hold Azazel, he, as well as the Neyaphem, his human followers, and anything else affiliate with him, were cast into a hellish pocket dimension called the Brimstone dimension. Before the sentence was passed, Azazel swore that, no matter how long it would take, he would have his revenge. Inside their prison, the humans lost themselves, becoming Azazel's monstrous pets, the Firedancers.
The spell that separated the Brimstone dimension from Earth was meant to last until "the fall of the kingdom," which took place 500 years later, but the Neyaphem were still trapped. However, the barrier between the worlds began to weaken, and Azazel, with the use of his teleporting powers, managed to break through to Earth every few years. While there, Azazel would occupy a human's body. He usually would alter his host's appearance and physical capabilities with sorcery, but he could not use his mutant powers, as he was still a prisoner.
The warlord would spend the next four thousand years searching for a way to open a portal in which his army could escape the Brimstone Dimension. During these years, he sired Nils Styger and Marcus Skarr, though he paid little interest in them.
Azazel met Mystique in Cologne, Germany, when he was disguised as a magnate named Walther Teufel. Though Mystique had contempt for him at first, they quickly became intimate after Azazel revealed himself to be a fellow mutant. From very early into their relationship, Azazel was certain that he had found his soulmate and true love.
