During the original Chitauri invasion of Earth, 7 of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, the Wasp, Ant-Man, and Spider-Man, joined forces to repel the invasion. They then became the Avengers, fighting the foes that no single super-hero could withstand!

History

Formation

When Stark Industries technology began to mysteriously disappear, Iron Man, the super-hero alter ego of Tony Stark, investigated. However, in the midst of the investigation, he is joined by old friend Captain America, who offers his help in investigating. The two soon discovered that the ones responsible for the thefts were alien shape-shifters known as the Chitauri. After several skirmishes with the Chitauri forces, the two heroes eventually encounter an allied Thor and Hulk, who had also been dealing with the Chitauri as well. The four united together to repress the threat. However, after finally uncovering the Chitauri master plan, to send a signal flare up to outer space in order to contact an invasion fleet, the four heroes are too late to prevent the flare from being sent, and soon, many thousands of ships begins descending upon the Earth in order to subjugate it.

In New York City, the invasion fleet has hit hardest in the greater downtown area.
