History
While much of the Avengers history is currently lost due to Ultron, some things are still known about the team. At the peak of their powers the Avengers were considered Earth's mightiest heroes. From Captain America down to Wasp they worked like a well oiled machine, whether it was Kronans, Kang, or the Masters of Evil they constantly won their battles. It's unclear whether they fought anyone else during their time as a team, but it's widely assumed so. The younger Avengers, also known as the Heroes of Tomorrow are still trying to figure that out. The Avengers were defunct for 13 years because of Ultron's reign, but when the Heroes of Tomorrow banded together to stop the threat of Ultron, the team became active once more.
Masters of Evil
After they had banded together to defeat Ultron, the Avengers spent two years going around the world and fixing as much as they could. Eventually they ran into a real problem, and that happened to be the Masters of Evil. Led by Baron Zemo and Madame Viper the Masters attempted to destroy the Avengers through their vast political reach and a bunch of well planned lies. However the Avengers stopped this and managed to grow as a team in the progress. [2]
Annihilation
4 Months after the Masters of Evil and situation in Latveria the Avengers find themselves with little to do and as a result some of the team members find themselves at an impasse for the first time in their lives. James and Francis are aren't exactly sure what they are without the Avengers. While Torunn has Asgard, Azari has Wakanda, and Pym has Stark Industries and everything that comes with that. When Torunn held a talk with a team about this very subject, Francis explained that he didn't know what he could do that he, James, and Pym weren't as fortunate as her and Azari, who had kingdoms to go back to and rule. For the rest of them they had to figure it out and that was hard when he never had to opportunity to stop and think about something like this before. What would they do when they weren't superheroes? It was a question James didn't like thinking about too much and so when the Wrecking Crew showed up he quickly directed the team to the fight.
After this ordeal the Avengers focus on building up their new Academy. The Avengers are still focused on expanding and are slowing integrating in 3 new members. May Parker, Cassie Lang, and Danielle Cage, each hero they've recently found since the world was put back to normal. The Avengers put these three under basic training and we learn that Academy is moreso a formality, a way for them to train with the original Avengers and get up to speed with their playbook. It also gives the governments overseeing the Avengers confidence that they aren't just letting anyone become an Avenger.
After this within the next couple of weeks the Avengers find themselves in some problems that kickstart the potential Annihilation of the Universe. The Avengers fight a robot which they learn is called the Super-Adaptoid which can take their powers. They initially struggle, but with help from the X-Men, the two teams are able to stop the robot from wreaking havoc across New York.

Eventually from the Human Torch along with Valeria Richards they learn about Annihilus, the Lord of the Negative Zone a being whose name seems to bring about death and destruction. The Avengers and the X-Men argue about what to do. They've just recently got their world back and they don't want to lose it again. But they aren't sure how to handle the situation.
Some like Jim, Tony, and Francis believed it was best if they simply let things be, they weren't sure how aware Annihilus was when it came to them, and they could simply make things worse by going back to the Negative Zone to find out. Francis points out that if they hadn't gone their in the first place they wouldn't be in this mess. Torunn on the other hand believed it was best they check things out immediately, insisting that you could either surprise your enemy or they could surprise you. She reminded everyone that planet Earth could not afford to go through another Ultron situation.
In reality most of the assembled Avengers wanted to go back to the Negative Zone believing it was not worth the risk of staying back. It was the hesitation of James that delayed this decision by a couple of hours. He wouldn't pick a side. Eventually the young Avenger got over his inner turmoil and admitted they needed to go, and as the leader of the Avengers his word was basically gospel and so the team prepared to send some Avengers to the Negative Zone.
They eventually chose to take Jim and Valeria who had already been to the Negative Zone alone with Pym, Riri, and Torunn and set off just thirty minutes after the initial meeting took place. With them gone James set out to tell the X-Men about what was happening, and in that time the Avengers who left to the Negative Zone returned just two minutes later worse for wear.
Torunn calls for the Avengers to Assemble explaining that they had been in the Negative Zone for a week and that time passes differently in the Negative Zone and on Earth so only two minutes passed. She explains Annihilus is coming and they need to stop him before he destroys the Universe. Hearing this Francis tells James to come back and he does, this time returning with X-Men. Before the meeting through flashbacks we learn of what exactly happened in the Negative Zone.
The heroes learned early of Annihilus treachery and attempted to end it, but were betrayed by a man named Ja'Vok Sier who they had trusted to help them destroy Annihilus' plans. With an army headed their way the group of five were forced to retreat back to Earth with the knowledge that Annihilus would be showing up in just one week's time.[3]
Quickly the Avengers and X-Men devise a plan to storm the Negative Zone and end this plot before it can get started. And throughout the week both teams train and collaborate together to stop this threat. At first the team consists of James Rogers, Danielle Cage, Jimmy Hudson, Olivier Lebeau, and Megan Frost-Summers. But after an incident in which a traveler from the future appeared at Avengers Mansion. Lyra Banner was added to this team in hopes the newly dubbed "She-Hulk" would prove helpfully in this battle.[4]

Soon enough a week passes by and the group head on the mission into the Negative Zone. There job is to blow up the ships of Annihilus' army before they can get to Earth. Because of the time differences the heroes left on Earth would immediately know if the group failed judging by the entrance of Annihilus, which could come just in less than a minute if they failed.
The heroes in the Negative Zone partially complete their mission managing to take out Annihilus' biggest warship which could destroy a planet with just one blast. It was during this mission that Danielle Cage used Captain America's shield for the first at James order. And after using it, James told her to keep it as she used it well, and that he would use his energy shield. Though they managed to destroy this worst warship, the other three warships carrying many of their enemies still managed to get to earth.
the remaining Avengers and X-Men were forced to protect the planet and were worried as Annihilus returned and the heroes did not. But they managed to do a good enough job to protect the planet. Though they struggled the eventually awoke the Hulk who after transforming was able to take down a warship on his own. The sudden appearance of Robbie Reyes also helped support the heroes, as the Ghost Rider managed to hold off many of their enemies. After that the heroes who went to the Negative Zone returned and the with everyone they quickly dispatched his army, the hardest part was to calm the raging Hulk, who managed to harm some of the other heroes.[5]
After this they finally face-off against Annihilus. A team consisting of Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Torunn, Wolverine, Powerhouse, X-23, Ironheart, Spider-Girl, Vision, and Nocturne. They were the only things that stood between Earth and Annihilus. It took some work but after some ingenious planning by James, Spider-Girl and Vision managed to steal the Cosmic Converter Rod from Annihilus, and Nocturne was then able to land a near fatal blow, with Torunn making sure he was dead by slicing him up with her sword.
This win marked the end of the Annihilus fight and the defeat of the Annihilation Wave but more surprises were in store. After the fight James told the Avengers and the X-Men that he figured during the fight in the Negative Zone that this would surely be his last for a while, he explains that he needs to be done with being Captain America for a while, and that he was taking a sabbatical. He explained that he chose a successor and that Danielle Cage was more than good enough to make the stars and stripes proud.[6]
It was a surprising ordeal for almost everyone and it quickly kickstarted some other events like Tony, Bruce and Vision deciding to take a step back from the Avengers as well. After this Azari and Torunn headed to their respective Kingdoms both needing to attend to their people, leaving just two of the Heroes of Tomorrow left on the active roster. These events were eventually publicized and with the official additions of Spider-Girl, Ghost Rider, Stature, and Danielle Cage as Captain America the public has begun to call this group the "All-New Avengers."
