Early Life[]

Tony Stark was born on Friday, May 29, 1970 in Manhattan, New York to billionaire inventor Howard Stark and his wife Maria, eleven minutes after his older twin brother Gregory.

Tony and Gregory were often watched over by the family butler Edwin Jarvis throughout their childhoods and became close with him, as their parents were often busy. Howard was under stress from running the family business Stark Industries, so he sunk into deep alcoholism and often lashed out at Tony for the slightest mistakes; Tony would often describe him as "cold" and "calculating." Howard allegedly never told Tony that he loved him, but claimed that Stark men were "made of iron", and often professing his admiration for Captain America (which caused him to resent the super-soldier), although Howard was sometimes caring and loving. Howard still contributed to Tony's education. On the other hand, his mother was gentle and nurturing and had a loving relationship with her. He often enjoyed hearing her play the piano. As a child, Tony read the stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, sparking his passion for engineering and desire to build his own suit of armor. Tony also enjoyed listening to Black Sabbath during his childhood; his favorite song was "Iron Man."

As Howard continued to sink deeper into alcoholism, on Christmas Eve, Howard forced Tony to drink a bottle of bourbon. Wanting the approval of his father, Tony drank the bottle, but this would be just the start of his own alcoholism. Around this time, Tony also had a pet dog named Leo. Leo died, which saddened Tony, but also causing his father to get angry at him. Jarvis, on the other hand, convinced Tony to keep himself occupied during his time of grief. Taking this advice, Tony decided to invent in his free time. Tony developed a close friendship with a girl named Meredith McCall, daughter of one of his father's rivals, Creighton McCall, causing his father to believe that he had become too soft. At six years old, Tony built his first V8 motorcycle. When Tony was seven years old, his father enrolled him at Phillips Academy in Andover, a private school where he was bullied by other students and earned the disdain of teachers who believed him to be too childish. In his spare time from schoolwork, he continued to read about King Arthur, as well as Vasco da Gama and the Wright Brothers. At Phillips Academy, he became good friends with Tiberius "Ty" Stone and developed a friendly rivalry with him, in both academics and athletics. At one point in high school, he became close friends with a girl named Jules; a friendship that would last for years, but also temporarily angering another student named Mike Miles. Another time in high school, Ty and Meredith, who attended the academy and was still friends with Tony, dared him to hack into the Pentagon. Eventually, in 1983, Tony and Meredith would fall in love, much to the dismay of both of their parents. Creighton sent Meredith away to a boarding school in Europe in order to keep her away from Tony. Tony was distraught by this, but quickly got over it when he began relationship with a girl named Naomi Clark. One time, Tony took Naomi for a ride on a motorcycle under the influence of wine, so he had crashed, but only sustained a broken arm. Eventually, the two ended their relationship, but remained friends. In the summer of 1983, Tony and Ty went to Monte Carlo and invited many of their friends, including a girl named Susan Beaumont. Tony and Ty decided to drag race in order to compete for Susan's affection. In the fall of 1983, Tony had Ted Slaght as a science professor, who would always encourage him to be open when it came to science and ideas. In 1984, Tony graduated as valedictorian from the Phillips Academy.

Adolescence and Early Adulthood[]

After completing high school, he enrolled in Massachusetts Institute of Technology for college. During his time in college, he met James Rhodes for the first time and became best friends with him. In 1986, at the age of sixteen, he won the 4th Annual MIT Robot Design Award. That same year, he met Josey Gardner and the two quickly began dating. A year later, in 1987, at the age of seventeen, he graduated summa cum laude from the institution.

When Tony reached the age of eighteen, rather than joining Stark Industries, he started his company called JT Technologies with Josey Gardner, although he had considered the name "Circuits Maximus." One day, Tony was working on a computer, when Josey implied that he didn't know anything about fiber-optic routing. Tony said that if he broke it, he would replace it and buy a new one. Josey was reluctant to use Stark Industries money to fund their company, which Tony claimed was a reason for people to invest in them. Later, Howard arrived at the garage and told Tony to attend the ceremony that night to "give the shareholders faith in the next CEO of Stark Enterprises." Tony declined and asked why Gregory could not inherit the company, but his father ordered him to get inside the limousine with him, so he decided to go and told Josey that he would return, much to her doubt. Tony changed into a suit and afterwards, Josey broke up with him and decided that she would take on JT Technologies herself, due to him siding with his father. Josey drove off with her equipment, away from Tony. Tony attended the ceremony that night and joined Stark Industries. Shortly after joining, his father sent him to the Technology for Future Symposium in Arlington, Virginia. At the symposium, he had met a young scientist, somewhat older than Tony, Dr. Otto Octavius for the first time. The two had a brief debated on how an inventor could gain recognition, with Octavius insisting that he had to supply the military with technology in order to do so.

Approximately six months later, a Stark Industries employee came to Tony with a Daily Bugle newspaper, informing him that a small-twin propeller plane had crashed near Salt Lake City with Josey onboard, killing her. Later that day, in order to take out his anger, Tony boxed a punching bag, when his father went in and told him to channel and direct his emotions rather than being a "blunt instrument." Tony quickly blamed his father for separating him and Josey, but the latter told his son that he had to focus on his future and told him about a new project called Nanotech. Shortly after Josey's death, Tony began to date an older woman named Sunset Bain, a fellow graduate from MIT. They met on a trip to Italy during a regatta and fell in love with each other, kissing on the sand on the beach. The two went to Stark's hotel room together and shared a moment of passion. Seeing this as an advantage, Sunset attempted to entice Tony into revealing the security codes for Stark Industries. Sometime later, Sunset used the codes to allow men in masks to break into Stark Industries and steal prototype weapons. A year later, in 1989, Sunset broke up with Tony and started her own business Baintronics, Inc. Afterwards, his father lashed out at him. Also that same year, Tony had watched news reports of the Tiananmen Massacre and the fall of the Berlin Wall. One month later, Tony attended the "Forward Thought Conference" at Harvard University held by Doctor Derenik Zadian and where he also met Bruce Banner for the first time. Doctor Zadian discussed the arms race and how Wernher von Braun originally invented the V-2 Rocket for the Nazis and was later recruited by their enemies, the United States, in order to help them in the space race against the Soviets.

Inheriting Stark Industries[]

In December of 1991, Howard and Maria prepared to leave for the Bahamas for vacation, although the latter was worried, believing his son to be too irresponsible. Tragedy struck on December 16th, when Tony's parents were killed in a car crash on Long Island, leaving him devastated. The day he learned of the accident, he spent an entire evening venting to Jarvis and had him speak to the media on his behalf regarding his parents' deaths. Obadiah Stane, a Stark Industries executive and longtime friend of the Stark family, became the acting CEO of the company. On Christmas Day, Obadiah and Rhodey visited Tony and greeted him, giving him presents and also attempting to comfort him. Tony spent his Christmas getting drunk over the deaths of his parents nine days earlier. A day later, Tony learned from the news that the Soviet Union had been dissolved and the Russian Federation had taken its place.

One month later, Tony, Jarvis, Obadiah, Obadiah's young son Zeke, Gregory, Rhodey, and Happy attended the funeral of Howard and Maria. Professor Slaght was also at the funeral and afterwards, he told Tony that his father would be stupid if he wasn't proud of him.

Two weeks later, Jarvis had died an old man, which had only contributed to Tony's grief, as he had lost the man who had helped raise and mentor him.

In March of 1992, Obadiah agreed to step down to allow Tony to inherit Stark Industries, becoming the youngest CEO of a Fortune 500 company in history ,much to Gregory's dismay, as he believed that he deserved to inherit the company. By then, he had built himself a custom mansion and, in order to help him around the house, he created a system called "Just A Rather Very Intelligent System", or J.A.R.V.I.S., to honor Edwin Jarvis.

Rhodey, who had joined the United States Air Force after graduating from MIT and rose through its ranks, became a liaison between the Air Force and Stark Industries, securing contracts with the United States Military, allowing Stark Industries to make billions of dollars every year, creating newer and more sophisticated weaponry.

In 1999, on New Year's Eve, Tony attended a science convention in Bern, Switzerland called Bern 2000 with a scientist named Maya Hansen. Afterwards, the two went to a party where Tony got drunk. At the party, Tony met a scientist named Ho Yinsen, who introduced him to another scientist named Yao Wu, before moving on. Tony, Happy, Maya, and several other female guests walked through an elevator and when they went out, Tony encountered a crippled scientist named Aldrich Killian, who asked for his financial backing for his scientific research firm, FuturePharm. Tony told Killian to meet him on the rooftop to further discuss working together; however, Tony had no intention of meeting him and went to spend more time with Maya. They went to Maya's hotel room, where she introduced him to a project called Extremis, which would be capable of re-growing human limbs if she received enough funding. Stark was impressed and began to kiss Maya before the two had an intimate moment in bed and going to sleep. He had also left Killian on the rooftop, alone, cold, and bitter. The next morning, Tony woke up and left Maya a note before leaving her behind to return home.

Sometime between 2000 and 2009, Tony watched a balloon race in St. Moritz with a woman named Janny. He had also been to a hospital for injury treatment and met a boy named Sam, who was undergoing chemotherapy. In response to the U.S. government starting the War on Terror and the Iraq War, Stark Industries supplied the military, resulting in both the company and Tony becoming significantly richer.

Iron Man is Born![]

On January 30, 2009, Tony showed off new Stark Industries weapons to his friend Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes and other military officers including United States Army General Thaddeus Ross, United States Marine Corps General Kriegkopf, and General Reginald Fortean and Colonel Glenn Talbot of the United States Air Force at the Yuma Providing Ground. The new weapon was able to create an accelerated wave explosion. After Pepper had shown the officers the weapon blueprints, Tony and Rhodey decided to fly in the former of the men's private jet back to Los Angeles. After returning to Los Angeles, they decided to go to a nightclub, where the former had seduced two girls named Celeste and Eloise. Rhodey attempted to convince his friend not to go to Afghanistan for the presentation of the new Jericho missile with him as the latter planned to do. Suddenly, Celeste's boyfriend attempted to attack Tony for seducing his girlfriend. Rhodey intervened and beat the man up, which prompted Tony to claim that he would be safe with his friend. Then, they decided to go to his mansion.

The next week, Tony and Rhodey went to Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas with Happy Hogan and Obadiah Stane for the presentation of the Apogee Award to the former of the friends due to his achievements. Gregory was invited, but declined, claiming that he was busy. Tony decided to gamble with Happy and his entourage watching him while waiting for the award ceremony to start, while Obadiah and Rhodey prepared. As the ceremony drew close, Obadiah attempted to get Tony to stop gambling and prepare for the ceremony, which the latter said that he wanted to gamble more. A presentation of Tony's past was shown to the audience at the hotel as Rhodey prepared to present his friend with the Apogee Award. Obadiah signaled to Rhodey that Tony was not there to accept the award, so he decided to accept the award on his behalf. After the ceremony, Rhodey found Tony still gambling and gave him the Apogee Award and was annoyed that he did not appear. Tony accepted the award, but gave it to a man dressed as Julius Caesar seconds later. When he exited the hotel with his entourage, he was stopped by Christine Everhart from Vanity Fair Magazine, who asked him about the ethics of Stark Industries' weapons manufacturing. Stark responded by bringing up his father's work during World War II and how it benefited the military. Next, Tony seduced Christine and brought her back with him to his mansion in Los Angeles, where they slept together. Tony woke up in the morning and instructed J.A.R.V.I.S. to escort Christine home, while he worked on one of his cars. His assistant Pepper Potts appeared and reminded him about his trip to Afghanistan, a Jackson Pollock painting he had bid on, a commencement speech at MIT that he was scheduled to give, and a form he needed to sign. Then, she revealed that it was her birthday and she had used his money to buy something for herself. He drank a cup of coffee and drove to the Stark Industries Aviation Division with Happy and met with Rhodey, who scolded the former for being three hours late. The two boarded Tony's private jet, where they got drunk and Rhodey had talked about his time in the Air Force, while Tony was to distracted, looking at hostesses dancing on a pole.

Building the First Suit[]

When they had arrived in Afghanistan, they were greeted by several military officers including USMC Colonel Ray Schoonover, US Army General Dixon, and USAF Colonel Ben Grimm. Also present were Marine lieutenants Frank Castle and Billy Russo. Tony displayed to the military, his newest invention: the Jericho missile, claiming that it was powerful enough to only be fired once to defeat the enemy. Then, he claimed that his father worked the same way and that it worked for America. The spectators applauded Tony, before he drank whiskey to celebrate. Then, Obadiah phoned Tony, asking him how the presentation went, which the latter claimed the military would be getting an "early Christmas." Then, Tony got into a military convoy, where the song "Back in Black" by AC/DC was played on the radio of his Humvee. Much to his surprise, the driver of the vehicle was a woman, which he joked about. Then, the soldier next to him asked for a selfie, before holding up a peace sign. Suddenly, they were attacked by militants, losing many men. Tony got out of the vehicle and attempted to phone for help, but saw a bomb made by Stark Industries and was blown away with pieces of shrapnel landing in his chest, becoming unconscious. Tony woke up and attempted to stay conscious, while people attempted to remove the shrapnel from his chest. He fell unconscious again as the terrorists were reading a ransom note to an unknown viewer. Later, Tony woke up in a cell to find an electromagnet attached to his chest by Ho Yinsen, whom he had met in Bern in 1999. Ho Yinsen explained that the electromagnet was there to stop shrapnel from falling into his heart and killing him. A terrorist from the Ten Rings named Abu Bakaar entered and greeted them, declaring Tony the greatest mass murderer in the history of the United States. Abu Bakaar said that he wanted Tony to build them their own Jericho missile, which he refused, so the terrorist had him waterboarded repeatedly, before taking him outside to show them stashes of Stark Industries weapons, which they would use against the United States Military. Abu Bakaar described the Ten Rings members as Tony's "loyal customers" and mentioned that they spoke Pashto, Urdu, Farsi, Arabic, Kurdish, Turkish, Kazakh, Tatar, Uyghur, Turkmen, Azerbaijani, and many others. Then, Abu Bakaar told Tony that the cell had the needed materials to construct a Jericho missile and that he would be released if he had cooperated. Tony agreed, but told Ho Yinsen that Abu Bakaar would likely not allow them to leave. Abu Bakaar just smiled at them. That night, Tony sat by a fire in a cave, considering his situation, while Ho Yinsen insisted that they come up with an escape plan. Tony instructed Abu Bakaar to bring in more supplies to his cave, claiming that he would build the missile, while Ho Yinsen translated. While working on the technology, Tony and Ho Yinsen created an Arc Reactor, which was able to ease the former's wounds by putting it into his chest to power the electromagnet protecting his heart. The Arc Reactor was a smaller version of one invented by his father with the scientist Igor Vanko. Then, Stark told Ho Yinsen that he actually needed the Arc Reactor to power a suit of armor that he showed in his blueprints. Between working times, Tony and Ho Yinsen played board games together for entertainment. Tony asked Ho Yinsen where he came from, which the scientist responded that he was from a small town in the country called Gulmira and that he wanted to see his family after escaping. Ho Yinsen asked Tony the same question, which the latter responded claiming that he had a brother, but they were not close. Then, Stark and Ho Yinsen continued working on the armor, dismantling the Stark Industries weapons. The next day, Raza, the regional leader of the Ten Rings had entered and saw the Arc Reactor, comparing Tony to Genghis Khan. Then, Raza told Tony and Ho Yinsen to finish the missile by the next day. Tony and Ho Yinsen returned to work quickly, hoping to escape before the next day, finishing the armor, while the former added missiles and flame throwers to it. After finishing the armor, Tony took its helmet and set it down on a desk, before planning his escape with Ho Yinsen. They concocted their escape plan and set up an explosive trap by the door, while Tony got into his new suit and the Arc Reactor was reacting with it. Several terrorists came to the door to check on the progress of the two men, but were blown up. The suit was still not powered and more terrorists were on their way, so Ho Yinsen decided to pick up one of the AK-47's and hold them off. When the suit finally powered, Tony waited for the terrorists to enter the room, before emerging and punching them, not being damaged by their bullet fire. Tony made his way through the cave, killing any terrorists in his way. He got his arm stuck in a wall and a terrorist attempted to shoot him in the head, but the bullet deflected and killed him instead. Tony freed himself and continued his escape, stopping when he saw Ho Yinsen dying after being shot several times. Before dying, Ho Yinsen warned Tony that Raza had a rocket launcher, so Tony dodged and shot his own missile at the terrorist, leaving him with burns and trapping him under rubble. Then, Tony turned back to Ho Yinsen and told him to get up so he could see his family again, which the scientist responded by saying they were already dead and that he would see them again soon. Tony thanked Ho Yinsen, who told him that he could leave him behind and to not waste his life. Ho Yinsen died and Tony came out of the cave, burning the terrorists outside alive, as they attempted to shoot him. Then, Tony destroyed the stockpile of Stark Industries weapons the terrorists had acquired. The suit was taking damage from the gunfire and Tony flew away, while the Ten Rings base exploded, with the blast knocking him down to the ground. Tony survived due to the armor, but abandoned it, making his way, until coming upon a helicopter, falling on his knees, and throwing a peace sign. The helicopter landed and Tony shared an embrace with Rhodey. Tony was returned to the United States by the United States Air Force.

Returning Home[]

Tony and Rhodey returned to the United States, landing in a military airport. There was a stretcher waiting to take him to the hospital, which he rejected and went to Pepper, who he saw crying. He jokingly claimed that Pepper was "happy to see her long lost boss", in which she responded by claiming that she was happy that she didn't have to find another job. Tony and Pepper went into a car driven by Happy Hogan and asked to be given a burger rather than go to the hospital for treatment. Then, Tony called a Stark Industries press conference, which Pepper advised against. Tony got his burger and went to the press conference at Stark Industries Headquarters, where he was greeted by Obadiah Stane, as well as Gregory. He finished the burger during the press conference and declared that Stark Industries would no longer sell weapons to the military, much to Obadiah's anger, as well as Gregory's. Later, their stocks began plummeting and Obadiah urged Tony to reconsider his decision, while Gregory confronted his brother for not consulting him over the decision. Tony responded by showing the two the Arc Reactor in his chest, which was the only thing keeping him alive, and that he needed to work on it.

Tony returned to his mansion and asked Pepper to change the Arc Reactor in his chest. She took it out and Tony told her to dispose of it, claiming that it had no more use.

A New Armor[]

Within the next few months, Tony spent his time building a new suit of armor, making it smaller, easier to maneuver, and able to fly higher and longer than the first one. While doing so, he usually mocked his robotic servants Dum-E and Dum-U. Within those months, he learned that Sam, the boy who he had met several years prior who was undergoing chemo therapy, had died, despite treatment. Tony thought to himself that his technology could and should have done good.

He decided to test the new suit's flight capabilities since the first suit flew poorly and crashed. He had Dum-U film the test, while having Dum-E prepare with a fire extinguisher. He started flying at five to ten percent power, until realizing that it was far more powerful and launched into the ceiling, before crashing to the floor, where Dum-E had sprayed him with the fire extinguisher. Then, Tony decided to modify the armor by building new stabilizers to help him control his flight. At one point, Pepper walked in, at first, mistaking him to be building weapons. Tony claimed that it was harmless and was not a weapon, but the stabilizer was overloaded with power and sent out a blast, knocking him off of his feet. He went upstairs and saw Obadiah with pizza after coming back from a meeting. Obadiah told Tony that the board had voted to block him from the company, believing that he was suffering from PTSD. Tony attempted to change Obadiah's mind, with no success. Then, Obadiah asked to look at the Arc Reactor, which Tony refused. Then, Tony returned to working on his suit, while J.A.R.V.I.S. assisted him. This time, Tony was able to fly around his basement and landed, but almost damaged some of his cars.

After several more trials, Tony perfected his flight and flew out of the mansion to test even further, despite J.A.R.V.I.S.' warnings. While flying, he passed by the airfield and saw his plane explode, with debris falling on a woman's car. He flew down and saw that it had fallen on a woman's car and rescued her, although she had a mild concussion and internal hemorrhaging. He flew her to the hospital, before returning to the site of the explosion and taking the device that caused it. Then, he returned to the mansion and had J.A.R.V.I.S. analyze the device, tracing it to a man in New Mexico named Aloysius Lafferty. He told Pepper that he would be in New Mexico for a few days to find the man who set of the plane explosion. However, J.A.R.V.I.S. insisted that Tony upgraded his suit first. Partially taking this advice, Tony analyzed the suit and checked on what could be improved.

Tony flew to New Mexico, testing the extent of his suit's flight capacity. Once he reached New Mexico, he decided that he wanted to beat the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird's altitude record and flew high into the sky, until his suit began freezing, causing him to start to fall. Seconds before he could crash, he started flying again, much to his amazement. Tony arrived in a town in New Mexico, hid his suit, and checked into an expensive hotel, where he encountered Janny, whom he met in St. Moritz years earlier. The next day, Tony picked up his suit and flew to Lafferty's hideout in the rural badlands, where he traced it. He kicked down the door and demanded to know who hired him. Lafferty told Tony that the payment came from an account from the Bank of Kildonen. As he answered, a man in a suit of armor with a picture of a knight chess piece and an object resembling a lance arrived to confront him. The two fought briefly, destroying Lafferty's hideout in the process and causing an explosion that blew the other man away, knocking him unconscious. Tony took the man's helmet and flew away with it, before the local law enforcement could arrive, flying back to Los Angeles.

He returned to his mansion with the helmet and found a box on his desk left by Pepper. He opened it and saw that it was the original Arc Reactor and that it had been framed with the words "Proof Tony Stark Has A Heart." Moments later, he saw that someone was trying to hack into his computer system, finding that a satellite was the cause. Tony flew into the sky and destroyed the satellite.

The next day, J.A.R.V.I.S. informed Tony that he had traced the payment to a Scotsman in Las Vegas named Laird Jaime of Glen Travail. He hid his suit in a garage in the Las Vegas Strip and stopped by the Area 52 Casino, where he learned Laird Jamie was staying and checked in. He had J.A.R.V.I.S. tap into the hotel's computers to learn when Laird Jamie arrived and leaves. He went to his suit and waited to ambush Laird Jaime and asked him why he hired the bombing. Before Laird Jaime could answer, two men, one with a picture of a bishop chess piece and another with a picture of a rook chess piece, attacked the two, killing Laird Jaime and engaging Tony in combat. Tony had caused minor destruction, fighting against the two attackers, but frightened a Swiss coupe named Claude and Sarah and a man named George. He defeated the "Knight" and "Rook" and left them for the authorities, before making his way back to Los Angeles.

He returned to his mansion and found a gift from Pepper that read, "Proof that Tony Stark has a heart" before planning to work on his Mark III Armor.

Resolutions![]

Several days later, Tony watched the news and saw that a party had been thrown at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in his name and realized that he did not approve of it. So, he left his two assistants to continue working on the Mark III Armor. He took a limo to the concert hall, where he was greeted by the press and a man who he had mistook for Hugh Hefner. He approached Obadiah, who was surprised to see him and told him that he was trying to change the minds of the Board of Directors from shutting them out. He went inside of the hall and met Agent Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D., who insisted on having a meeting regarding the former's kidnapping. However, Tony did not pay attention and was distracted by Pepper Potts in a blue dress and said that he would have his team schedule the meeting instead. He quickly brushed off Coulson and went to Pepper, complimented her, and offered her a dance, which, at first, she was reluctant. The two shared a kiss, before Tony went to get drinks for both of them. He was confronted by Christine Everhart, whose name he had briefly forgotten and told him that Stark Industries had sold weapons to the Ten Rings and had armed several mercenaries. Tony denied this, but Everhart told him that some Stark Industries executives had approved the sale. He was furious and went to Obadiah to ask him if he knew anything. Obadiah, then told Tony that he refused to stop selling weapons and that it was his decision to have the board of directors to shut him out. Then, Obadiah brushed him off and left the party.

The next day, Tony decided that he had to do something about the sale of weapons to the Ten Rings, so he flew to Ho Yinsen's home village Gulmira in Afghanistan to confront the terrorists. Upon arrival, he saw that the terrorists were dragging away the residents to be executed, so he used his suit to open fire, killing all terrorists in his sight, while leaving all civilians unharmed. Then, he saw his former captor Abu Bakaar, disarmed him, and left him for the villagers, before destroying the Ten Rings' stockpile of Stark Industries weapons.

Iron Man (2008) - Explosion in Afghanistan

Tony after destroying a Ten Rings tank.

The Ten Rings brought a tank and opened fire on Tony, who grabbed a Jericho missile from the stockpile and destroyed the enemy vehicle. Then, he picked up another missile and destroyed the other stockpile. Tony attracted the attention of the United States Air Force, who closed in on the village to investigate the explosions. In order to prevent the Air Force from targeting him, he contacted his friend Colonel James Rhodes and informed him that he was the cause of the explosion, by fighting terrorists, which caused the latter to panic. Tony and Rhodey both decided to return to U.S. soil, while preparing an explanation on what possibly could have happened in Afghanistan.

Tony returned to his California mansion, where Dum-E and Dum-U took off his suit and Pepper learned of his activities. Pepper was scared to see bullet holes in the suit, while Tony assured that he was well. He told Pepper to hack into the Stark Industries database to find out where the weapons were being sold, while telling her that he would have Morley and Clytemnestra help him on the Mark III armor later on. Then, he went into his living room and sat down, finding himself unable to move, after being shocked by Obadiah with a taser. Then, Obadiah removed the Arc Reactor from Tony's chest before revealing that he had ordered his kidnapping months prior in Afghanistan and the hitmen in Nevada. Tony was unable to move for a while, until attempting to reach for the original Mark I reactor, until falling to the floor. Dum-E and Dum-U were able to help him by handing him the reactor. Rhodey entered the mansion and helped Tony up, before telling him that Pepper had called S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to arrest Obadiah. Tony went inside of his suit and flew off, as Rhodey admired it; Tony told his friend to have the Air Force stay clear of the skies. Obadiah learned that his former friend was coming for him, so he sent his Circuits Breaker machine to deal with him. The Circuits Breaker opened fire on Tony, causing explosions as Tony dodged them. Then, Tony shot his lasers and missiles at the machine, destroying it. Obadiah flew into the sky in the reconstructed Mark I Armor and attacked Tony with a laser blast, knocking him into a Roxxon Corporation truck. He flew back up and exchanged laser fire with Obadiah, overpowering him and knocking him down into the Stark Industries building. Obadiah picked up debris from the destroyed building and attempted to hit Tony, who dodged and broke it. Then, Obadiah shot another laser at Tony, blasting him away. He followed Obadiah into the Stark Industries building, where he saw Pepper being held captive by mercenaries, so he used his missiles to take them down, before freeing her. The battle and destruction had chased away frightened scientists and employees including Dr. William Ginter Riva, Dr. Douglas Birely, Dr. Theron Atlanta, and the siblings Morley and Clytemnestra Erwin. Obadiah emerged and fired at Tony, knocking him through a wall, before he got back up. He saw a baby boy inside of the laboratory and asked Pepper to try to save him from the battle. The two armored men continued their fight, until Pepper and the baby had gotten clear and Tony had chased Obadiah into the sky, dragging him higher until their suits began to lose power. As Obadiah's suit began to plummet, Tony raced back to ground level and fired his laser into his enemy's suit, destroying it and killing him, while causing an explosion.

I Am Iron Man![]

Yeah, okay. Yeah. The truth is... I am Iron Man.
Tony, while giving a speech to the press about the incident at Stark Industries.

After the battle, Tony was rushed into an ambulance by Rhodey and some paramedics, which turned out to actually be a vehicle full of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. He was dropped off to Agent Coulson's location, who reviewed the fight against Obadiah Stane and told him that S.H.I.E.L.D. needed to train him to become a better fighter.

The next morning, the press had all been talking about the "Iron Man", who had fought against Obadiah Stane. Coulson prepared Tony with a false story to explain his absence during the battle, claiming that Iron Man was his bodyguard, before giving a speech to the press. Instead, Tony admitted that he was, in fact, Iron Man.

Later that night, Tony returned home to find S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury inside, who told him that he was not the only "special person" and that he was forming a team called the Avengers Initiative with people like him. Tony was not interested and told Fury to leave his home.

Amalgam[]

Two entities known as the Brothers, one representing the Marvel Universe and the other representing the DC Universe, remembered each other's existences, causing the two universes to merge. The Brothers held a contest in which they took fighters from both of their universes and pitted them against each other with the losing universe would be destroyed; in order to prevent this, the Living Tribunal and DC's Spectre joined forces to create the Amalgam Universe, combining characters, events, and aspects from both universes. During the Amalgam event, Tony was combined with DC's Hal Jordan to make Harold "Hal" Stark, the Iron Lantern. Hal Stark was a billionaire and the founder and owner of Stark Aircraft (a combination of Stark Industries and DC's Ferris Aircraft). He had a relationship with Pepper Ferris (combination of Pepper Potts, Madame Masque, and DC's Carol Ferris), who was also the villain Madame Sapphire, the daughter of Senator Harrington Ferris (a combination of Harrington Byrd and DC's Carl Ferris), much to the chagrin of his assistant and mechanic Happy Kalmaku (a combination of Happy Hogan and DC's Tom Kalmaku). He was best friends with Stewart Rhodes (a combination of James Rhodes and DC's John Stewart). Hal's archenemy was Mandarinestro (a combination of the Mandarin and DC's Sinestro). Other enemies included H.E.C.T.O.R. (a combination of M.O.D.O.K. and DC's Hector Hammond) and Great White (a combination of Ultimo and DC's The Shark).

Iron Lantern was also a founding member of the Judgement League Avengers (a combination of the Avengers and DC's Justice League). He and the JLA had once confronted the metamutant known as the Mariner (a combination of the Sub-Mariner and DC's Aquaman) for the alleged destruction of several Roxxon oil tankers.
