History

She was my Ma, I loved her, I miss her, just like you, but she wouldn't have wanted this, she wouldn't want revenge. She knew better than that, she knew that it meant to be good.
Rogue

Early Years

Anna Marie is the daughter of the mutant shapeshifter Mystique and the clairvoyant Destiny, thanks to Mystique's ability to change her gender. Mystique and Destiny would live as a family in Caldecott County, Mississippi, disguised as as ordinary family unit in order to raise Anna Marie as a normal child. Anna Marie was a rebellious child, gaining her the nickname "Rogue" from her teachers. When she was 14 Rogue grew close to a boy named Cody Robbins and, after some time, impulsively kissed him. It was in this moment that her mutant powers activated and, being in direct skin-to-skin contact with Cody, she would absorb his life energy and leave him in a coma. Rogue was traumatised by the experience and, attempting to protect her, Mystique and Destiny would take their daughter on the run with them. Rogue was unable to control her powers and would wear body-concealing clothing to protect others.

The family would successfully hide out for a number of years until they drew the attention of William Stryker and Project Wideawake, the United States task force dedicated to the mutant 'threat'. Mystique would seek protection for her daughter with a man she had met years ago, Charles Xavier, and his team, the X-Men. A violent attack by Stryker's forces however would result in the death of Destiny, something that the clairvoyant had seen coming. Mystique's thirst for vengeance on Stryker and humanity would push Anna Marie away and she vanished into the night, determined not to become a part of the war between humans and mutants.

Finding Her Own Path

Anna Marie, now going by the name Rogue in order to stay under the radar, ended up in New Orleans, working behind a bar when, one night, she saved a young girl, Alya Breece, from a member of the Assassins Guild. Alya, a mutant, was being chased by both the Assassins Guild and the Thieves Guild due to her mutant power of being able to find anyone or anything. Rogue would attempt to protect Alya and in the process came face to face with Gambit, a member of the Thieves Guild, who would take the girl. Gambit however would regret his decision and agreed to help Rogue free her by alerting the Assassins Guild to her location, leading to a fight between the two guilds. Amidst the chaos Rogue would use her powers for the first time in years to absorb powers from a number of thieves and assassins. She would use them to free Alya and beat Gambit's ex-lover Belladonna to allow their escape. Amidst the chaos however Gambit would fight, and inadvertently kill, Julian Boudreaux, the heir to the Assassins Guild. While they would get Alya to the safety of her family, who would leave New Orleans, Gambit knew that if he or Rogue stayed in New Orleans then they would be hunted by both guilds, leading them to flee together.

The Assassins Guild would continue to hunt for the pair, determined to have revenge. Rogue and Gambit, despite their differences, stuck together and made for Madripoor, a criminal nation that they thought they could hide out on. There they encountered Rogue's mother Mystique, who helped her daughter to negotiate a deal with the Assassins Guild, a single fight between Rogue and Belladonna, if Rogue won then her and Gambit could go free, if she lost then they would both go willingly to the Guild. Rogue would beat Belladonna, winning their freedom as the Guild relied on their honour and word to trade. Rogue and Mystique would grow closer to reconciliation but Rogue could not accept Mystique's new criminal enterprises or her continued belief that humanity would never accept mutants as their equals. With nowhere else to go Rogue would leave Madripoor alone.

Rogue would later receive a call for help from Alya's mother, as her daughter had been kidnapped by the Purifiers, who intended to use her to find and kill mutants. Rogue attempted to fight the Purifiers but was nearly killed before being saved by Gambit, who had followed her, realising that he wanted to be a better person and that Rogue could help him do that. Together they saved Alya once again. Recognising that her powers would always make her a target Rogue, with the blessing of her family, took Alya to the Xavier School. Xavier would offer Rogue and Gambit a place on the X-Men and, with nowhere else to go and having seen the threat that young mutants were under, agreed to join the team.
