Early Life[]
Alexander Goodwin Pierce was born on August 18, 1936.
During World War II, his father served in the 101st Airborne Division.
S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy[]
In 1954, Pierce wanted to join S.H.I.E.L.D. which was formed four years earlier; he was accepted into the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy of Communications in Virginia. During his time in the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, he met Rick Stoner and majored in civilian surveillance, graduating in 1958.

One year later, Pierce met the new recruits for the original Avengers Initiative which included Charles Xavier, Erik Lehnsherr, Patriot, Blonde Phantom, Namora, Ulysses Bloodstone, Dum-Dum Dugan, and the Whizzer. Pierce was tasked by Director Peggy Carter with advising the Avengers on their missions. The Avengers' first mission was to capture former HYDRA agent-turned-member of Leviathan Johann Fennhoff, on orders of S.H.I.E.L.D. official and HYDRA scientist, Arnim Zola.
During his time in S.H.I.E.L.D., he had married an unnamed woman and had a daughter with her.
Working with Nick Fury[]
In 1979, Pierce met a former soldier named Nick Fury who was assigned to his team. Pierce and Fury went to Colombia for their first mission. Pierce's daughter was taken hostage in Bogotá by the Medellín Cartel during a visit. Pierce and Fury went to Bogotá and rescued the hostages.
Member of HYDRA[]
Shortly after the situation in Bogotá, Pierce was secretly recruited into HYDRA by Gideon Malick as a double agent.
In 1985, Pierce was appointed Undersecretary of the World Security Council, giving HYDRA a huge advantage.
In 1989, Pierce and Malick were both invited to the Bilderberg Conference in Isla de Toja, Spain and met King T'Chaka of Wakanda. During the conference, Pierce had witnessed a South African national named Ulysses Klaue attempt to assassinate T'Chaka, but fail.
In 2011, President Barack Obama nominated Pierce to succeed Robert Gates as the United States Secretary of Defense and become the 23rd holder of the position. Pierce's appointment would make him the highest-ranking HYDRA member in the United States Government and giving HYDRA a major, but secret influence on them.
