Early Years

Alex Summers is the son of Christopher Summers, a test pilot for the U.S. Air Force, and his wife Katherine Ann Summers. When Alex and his younger brother Scott were teenagers, their home was attacked by a group of Shi'ar soldiers. While the brothers escaped thanks to their mother's actions, both of their parents were seemingly killed and their home burnt down. During the attack, Alex demonstrated his mutant powers for the first time to aid in their escape. The brothers were placed in an orphanage in Omaha, Nebraska, where they were subjected to a series of tests and experiments by the orphanage's owner, Mr. Milbury, an alias for the geneticist Mr. Sinister who had long been studying mutants. The brothers would escape from the orphanage and go on the run and it was while they were homeless that Scott first demonstrated his own mutant abilities.

After a year of living on the streets and stealing to get by, the brothers were found by Charles Xavier, who invited them to his School for Gifted Youngsters alongside other burgeoning mutants where they learned to control their mutant powers. This group would later become the first X-Men, with Alex taking on the codename Havok. He proved an influential member of the team, though his rash decision making could sometimes get him, and his teammates into trouble. He would fight alongside his teammates against Magneto and his Brotherhood, as well as many other threats the X-Men encountered. Over time Alex and his fellow X-Men teammate Jean Grey grew close, despite the fact that he knew his brother had feelings for her. Unable to hide his feelings, Alex confessed to Jean and the two became a couple just moments before Scott had planned to tell Jean how he felt. This would cause a severe rift between the two brothers and would be a factor in Cyclops leaving the X-Men to lead the Brotherhood in the aftermath of the fall of Project Wideawake. Alex would blame himself for the tensions with his brother, which would put strain on his relationship with Jean.

The two brothers would not see each other again until the X-Men and Brotherhood were forced to work together to combat the threat of William Stryker and the Purifiers. While Havok initially hoped that he could get through to his brother, he was shocked to see how far from Xavier's dream that Scott had drifted as he allowed Mystique to murder Stryker. The next time the brothers met was as enemies; as the X-Men attempted to prevent the Brotherhood from destroying a laboratory seeking a mutant cure, the tension between Cyclops and Havok exploded and the two came to physical blows, a fight that saw Cyclops blast his brother out of a window, truly severing the bond between them.

Blood of Apocalypse

The X-Men would come into conflict with a group known as the Marauders who had been collecting genetic samples for their master, Mister Sinister. Sinister was seemingly happy to see Alex again and gave him a warning about the coming threat of Apocalypse. Apocalypse was an ancient mutant, potentially the very first, and had awoken from a deep slumber, sensing that the tides were shifting against his kind. Apocalypse planned to test humans and mutants alike by causing a series of catastrophic events around the world with the help of his Four Horsemen. The X-Men would attempt to stop Apocalypse but the situation seemed dire due to Apocalypse's overwhelming power until Cyclops arrived with the Brotherhood. Alex and Scott finally reunited on the same side, fighting together. Their reunion would be cut tragically short however, as Havok was impaled by Apocalypse's biomorphic bladed arm in front of Scott and Jean. He died in his brother's arms, unable to even say a final word to the people he loved.
