Backstory

My dad has always taught me how to be a good person when society is already messed up. I remember him telling me -- "a real hero takes risks". I sure wish he could see me now. He would be very proud."
Starbolt

Early Life

Ahmir-Jordan Kwame Washington was born in San Francisco, California to Lisa Marie Washington, who was a seamstress, and Charles Abdallah Otieno, who served in the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD). Throughout his childhood, A.J. looked up to his father who was the captain of SFPD, his humility and determination inspiring him to become a hero. Eventually, the family moved to Brooklyn, New York, and A.J. and his twin sister Chayana immediately accepted the new change of scenery. He was placed in volunteering at a homeless shelter called F.E.A.S.T. by his father to help strangers and families who had lost their homes, and he was drawn into it as it was the first step to being a hero, which made Charles proud for his hard work.

Unfortunately, he was murdered days before A.J. and Chayana's thirteenth birthday and they were left with the early birthday gifts the officers gave them at the time of his death. A.J. has since been raised by Lisa, who moved the twins to Forest Hills, Queens, and started their year in Midtown High School, finding new friends along the way like Jazmine Watley, De'Marion DaCosta, child prodigy Eureka Harris and high school senior, Luke Cage, followed by bullies like Biff Wellington and Milan Vanderblit.

Birth of Starbolt

At one point, when AJ started his sophomore year, he was on his way to F.E.A.S.T., and just when he was going to enter the building, he spotted rainbow-colored lightning that burst into the sky, and one of them hits him in the chest. The shock from the bolt ended up mutating his bloodstream, causing him to develop cosmic powers and abilities that seemed to rival Captain Marvel's. When A.J. discovered this, he was told by Chayana that he was given the opportunity to follow in their father's footsteps. Even though A.J. felt the chance had come to prove to himself that he could be a hero, he felt skeptical at first and at the same time, vigilante superhero Spider-Man had already become famous, and when A.J. watched how Spider-Man protects New York, he was reminded of his father -- how he was selfless and determined to help people.

However, when a terrorist group armed with bombs and guns raided at the mall A.J. was hanging out at with a group of friends, he was put in a position where he could either stop the armed men from harming people, or do nothing and they would end up killing everyone in the mall. After remembering his father telling him when he was younger that "a real hero takes risks," A.J. used his newly-given powers to stop the terrorists by disarming them, and saving the people as well as himself. The news of the confrontation was shown on TV and A.J. was confronted by his mother about it, fearing for his safety. A.J. revealed his new powers to Lisa and told her that he had to stop the armed men or else they would've blown up the mall and killed everyone inside of it, not to mention letting her know how much he wanted to be like his father.

Eventually, with the help of Chayana, Jazmine, and De'Marion, A.J. learned how to master his abilities and Lisa came to terms with A.J. having powers and let him know that he needed to take the hero mantle seriously, reminding him that his father had really put his life on the line to keep the streets safe. A.J. took his mother's words and she presented him with a navy, white, and gold suit with an eye-mask and shades to match. A.J. puts it on, and Chayana gave him his birthday present, which he never opened. When he finally opened the gift, it was revealed to be a brown leather bomber jacket. Thanking his father, A.J. put on the jacket, completing his new hero look, and he dubbed himself "Starbolt", making his debut appearance by taking on criminals.
