Adrian Toomes was the owner of Bestman Salvage before the Department of Damage Control and Syatl Industries ran him out of business. In debt and unable to find work, Toomes and his partner Phineas Mason created an exo-suit from Chitauri technology. Together they would sell weapons on the black market. Toomes was able to operate for eight years without drawing the attention of the authorities or the Avengers before he encountered Spider-Man. Unknown to him, Peter Parker was dating his daughter, Liz Allan.
Toomes later developed an improved design of the wings.
